For my diversity event, I went to the “Business case for Diversity”. I learned a lot from this speaker on how diversity within a work place will better the company as a whole. I thought his research was kind of cool on how he went into a business and formed two groups’ people. One group was the eight people with the highest IQ, and then the second group was a mix of different IQ’s. He had each group do the same project and the outcome showed that the diverse group actually outperformed the group with the highest IQ’s. The reason is because the group with the highest IQ’s was really smart in what they do, but when it came to this project some of the lower IQ people could do other things really well. So when you add diversity to a group, it will make the group perform so much better because each person has their own trades of expertise. He gave an example of you got to think of yourself as a tool box, and the tools inside show what you have to offer. I like to think that the two groups were their own tool boxes and in the one tool box all there was eight hammers and in the other tool box there was a whole assortment of tools. Which tool box would you take to fix a car?
My dad and my uncle farm together and it seems like they are always disagreeing on what should be done. So once when I was younger I asked why they still farm together when they are always disagreeing. My dad told me that when in a partnership you should be able to disagree with each other because if everyone had the same idea what good would it be to be in a partnership, if no one was going to be able to bring in better or new ideas. I thought this was a good example because it shows how if you have a diversity of ideas you will be able to have things work in a more efficient way and have fewer mistakes.

That is very true what your dad told you when you were little that if you agree how will that benefit everyone. There would be no new ideas or products.
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome example, and an awesome experience for you as a kid. It sounds like you can easily recognize the advantages of people disagreeing with each other. It shows a useful form of diversity.
